An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Some professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

According to the social media company, the service has taken down violative material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of members, populated with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Within these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
